The Panama Hat was officially introduced in the early 20th century, but it’s inspired by South American weaving traditions that date back half a millennia. The hat originates in Ecuador, but takes its name from the Panama Canal — the workers who built the canal wore them for protection from the sun. Guanabana’s Panama Hat has a pinch front, wide brim and patterned band around the crown. It’s hand-woven from natural toquilla straw by Wayuu artisans using the traditional Colombian iraca technique. This is a hat with serious structure, so avoid tossing it in your bag if you don’t want it to get bent out of shape.
